How to protect your email id's / social networking accounts from getting hacked

Recently I have noticed that email account/social networking account hacking has increased a lot. The hacker usually hacks your email password and sends spam emails to all your contacts using your email id and then deletes sent items and leaves your email id password unchanged , so you wont figure it out that your email id has been hacked. Facebook accounts are compromised when you click on supecious links which appears to have been posted by one of your friends.

Below are few steps to follow to prevent your account from getting hacked

1> Avoid checking emails in Cyber cafes or Public places with Open wifi's, as this places are easily targeted by hackers by either placing keyloggers in target machines or through sniffing passwords from open wifi areas

2>Change your email id,social networking account passwords atleast every 3 months and avoid using same passwords for all accounts

3>To build a strong Password Make sure your password comprises of alphabets(from a to z and A to Z),Numbers and special characters and contains minimum 8 characters or more.

4> Always keep your firewall Enabled (In MacOsX the firewall is disabled by default) and Keep your Antivirus Updated(I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials)

5>Install WOT(Web Of Trust) addon. This is a very usefull Tool for warning users when they visit websites that are known for suspecious activity (Virus,Malwares,Hacking,Phishing etc). This addon is available for Almost all the known Browsers(Internet Explorer,FireFox,Chrome,Opera,Safari etc)

6>Avoid clicking on suspecious links in emails or Facebook accounts even if it was sent by your friends. 99% of the time when you visit this suspecious links you will be warned by the WOT addon(If you have installed WOT), But even WOT might miss new threats

7>When browsing in Cyber cafes or Public Computers or when logging into your online bank account,Paypal account etc, Always browse in Private browser or incognito mode. This is a feature in browsers where all your browsing activity is kept in temporary cache and Pages you view in this window won't appear in your browser history or search history, and they won't leave other traces, like cookies, on your computer after you close the private browsing or incognito window.

8>Most of the email accounts have options for linking your cell phone number so that incase you forget your password , your password will be texted directly to you but they can also be used for warning you from unauthorised account access, you will receive text message when your account information has been changed or accessed from unknown location, Facebook provides this facility . when your facebook account is accessed from unknow device you will immediately receive a text message and you can take necessary action from getting your account compromised.

Steve Jobs, the mastermind behind Apple's iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac and iTunes, has died, Apple said. Jobs was 56.
The homepage of Apple's website this evening switched to a full-page image of Jobs with the text, "Steve Jobs 1955-2011."

Right Click on the Steve Jobs photo on apple homepage and click properties, you will see that the image is named as t_hero.png, I guess he was really a hero for many of us.

"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being," Apple said in a note on its Web site.
"Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."

Steve has always had his own way of doing things, a famous temper that left many engineers crying. When things were going well, he was worshipped. But, when things started turning sour, that unique way didn't earn him so many fans.
In May of 1985 Jobs was effectively fired by John Sculley, who'd joined Apple from Pepsi as CEO. Steve Jobs was free to do his own thing.

How to Read and Write to NTFS partition in Mac OS X

This Tweak Adds the NTFS Write feature in MacOsX (Experimental):

This tweak is tested on MacOsX 10.6.7 - 10.7.0 (This May or Not Work on Lower Versions and some users have reported that similar tweaks have led to data loss or ntfs partition rendered unaccessible, So "PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK" )

Download This File

It has the ntfs.kext binary from the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and a script. Unpack it to the Desktop. You should get the NTFS_Enabler folder with two files: mount_ntfs and ntfs. Launch Terminal.app and Proceed as Below ->

1) Type sudo -s and press Enter. Type in your password and press Enter.

2) Make backup copy of the ntfs.kext binary (!this is a one line command!):

mv /System/Library/Extensions/ntfs.kext/Contents/MacOS/ntfs /System/Library/Extensions/ntfs.kext/Contents/MacOS/ntfs_orig

3) Copy ntfs.kext binary from Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard replacing the original one (!this is a one line command!):

cp ~/Desktop/NTFS_Enabler/ntfs /System/Library/Extensions/ntfs.kext/Contents/MacOS/ntfs

4) Create a backup copy of mount_ntfs:

mv /sbin/mount_ntfs /sbin/mount_ntfs_orig

5) Now place the new mount_ntfs binary which activates ntfs.kext for rw:

cp ~/Desktop/NTFS_Enabler/mount_ntfs /sbin/mount_ntfs

6) Fix the scripts rights and attributes:

chown root:wheel /sbin/mount_ntfs

and then:

chmod 755 /sbin/mount_ntfs

7) Launch Disk Utility and repair permissions. Reboot after this operation.

Package has a text document(Terminal-CMD) with the commands line by line, as the blog engine might break some lines. After the reboot the NTFS partitions must be mounted read-write without any additional fixes and reboots! In case anything goes wrong you can roll it back with the backed up copies.

Adobe has not released 64bit Acrobat reader for Linux and its not possible to install 32bit acrobat reader without doing some tweaks on 64bit Linux. so solution is to install i486 version of Acrobat reader.

This should install Acrobat reader on your 64bit Linux Os

Fix FlashPlayer Problem in Mozilla Firefox (Linux Os)

I used to face this problem in many websites which has video steaming, even thought youtube videos used to play properly in mozilla firefox (Linux OS) , while i play videos in Lockerz the videos were not playing properly , so after bit research i found this cool addon for firefox call Flash-Aid, after i installed this addon the flash player problem was fixed in Lockerz and other websites .

To install this addon in Firefox, click Tools -> Add-ons (Ctrl+Shift+A)
and search for flash-aid add-on else

and install the add-on manually

after successful installation you will find Flash-Aid icon on right most top corner of firefox

Just click on that icon and new window will pop open
Select the Installation Options Tab

And in the version and source , select the version of flash player suitable for your system, the flash-aid will automically select the best version for your system by default.

Then select the script preview tab and click on Execute Button

Now a Terminal(Konsole) windows will open and it will ask for root password
after you have entered the password, it will download the flashplayer and install and will ask you to restart Firefox

This should Fix Flash player problem in Mozilla Firefox.

Finally Installed MacOsX On My Laptop

After Days of experimentation with many MacOsX distribution i finally found one which actually worked on my dell inspiron 1545 laptop.
But after installation : Sound , Wifi, Battery Monitor was not working and graphics was set to 1024x768

I tested many drivers and had many kernel panics but finally found some drivers that worked. still I'm unable to find graphics card driver and also laptop touchpad goes out of control sometimes.

If you are planning on installing OsX86 on your Pc or laptop you better findout the MacOsX version compatible for you Machine

Things i followed while Installing Mac And After installation:

1) Start installation in Safe mode and verbose mode. Just pass -x -v flags to kernel before you load the installation

2)During installation click customize and make sure you have ps2 kext clicked, In begining i had not clicked it and my laptop's keyboard was not working and i had to work with external usb keyboard but then i found the problem.

3)Right after finishing the installation , boot the installed OS with -x and -v flag and after you have setup user account and logged in then reboot and boot in normal mode, I found many times that after installation if i boot in normal mode it usually hangs.

4)Use kexthelper application for installing kext file(drivers)(kernel extention)

5)If you dont have working audio after installation search for VoodooHDA.kext for your laptop hardware online it worked for me.

6)And for broadcom wifi device i used IO80211Family.kext you might find one for your device if you do similar search

7)I used VoodooBattery.kext for laptop batter monitor .

8) I would recommend you first install windows and then install MacOsX as in mac boot loader even windows drive is shown and you can select windows partition to boot at OS selection menu of MacOsX
but if you install Mac first and then windows . Mac Mbr will be deleted and then you have to install extra software's like EasyBcd and configure to make MacOsX Appear in OS choice menu

9)Install Macdrive software (By MediaFour) in Windows , by using this you can easily access Mac Partition in Windows . So if you had installed a driver and it caused kernel panic ,you can boot to windows and browse Mac partition and go to System \ Library\ Extentions and find that kext file you recently installed and just delete it and now boot you MacOsX with -x -v flags (safe and verbose mode) and if it boots properly then reboot in normal mode.

10)After installing updates i usually faced kernel panic ,so right after update i used to boot with "-x -v arch=i386 -F" flags and it used to boot successfully. and try deleting dsmos.kext and sleepenabler.kext after installing the update in case you still get kernel panics as these two are usually main cause for kernel panics as far as i noticed.

This is all the tips I have for anyone who is interested in installing MacOsX on their PC or Laptops

Mylot Trick -Copy-Pasting.

As You may have noticed if your user rating is lower than 500, you wont be allowed to do copy paste when responding or starting any discussions..

But there is a very simple trick for this and can be done easily using Mozilla Firefox

Follow steps below

A> Open Firefox, then Click Tools at the top(Menu Bar), and then click Options...B>Now Choose the Content Tab and untick the Enable JavaScript..
C> Now you can Copy-paste into the text box of mylot..

But make sure to re tick or check the Enable JavaScript in firefox before clicking the Preview response or post response button in mylot, else you wont be able to post without the java script enabled..

Saving Images in album of your Friends or someone else in Orkut

You might have noticed that right click doesn’t work while browsing albums of your friends or someone else..

And you end up using the Print Screen method to get those images, get copied into paint and then saving them..

But there is alternative for this and its simple and you will get the actual image uploaded by the user..

First open the image you want to save, just follow these 4 easy steps to save that image.

a)Left click on the image you want to save and keep it pressed.

b)Now slowly drag the cursor(holding on to the left click of mouse button) to a new tab of your browser

c)In the new tab you will see that image you where holding your left click on is transfered.

d)Now simply right click on that image and save the image..

MMC password recovery and formatting

PASSWORD RECOVERY

Option 1: install and launch MMCPWD application. it will display some special characters including your password.

Option 2: locate mmcstore file. install and launch System Explorer or FExplorer application. go to c:\system\ and open (using unicode/hex editor) the mmcstore file. it will display your password.

NOTE: you can also copy the mmcstore file to any folder of your phone memory, rename it to mmcstore.txt and open it without using any unicode/hex editor).

** if mmcstore is no longer available (let's say you already formatted your phone memory so mmcstore is deleted, or you bought a password-protected MMC, or whatever reason), proceed to formatting a password-protected MMC 'cause its hopeless to recover the password anymore.**

FORMATTING PASSWORD-PROTECTED OR CORRUPTED MMC

Formatting a password-protected or corrupted MMC is different from formatting an ordinary working MMC. YOU CANNOT format such kind of MMC using any Nokia Series60 phone nor even the card reader.

To format those kinds of MMC successfully, use a digital camera, Nokia Communicator series phones (such as N9210i), palm devices, or any MMC supported devices other than S60 phones and card readers.

if all else fails, bring it to where you bought it and claim for a warranty (if not yet expired) or bring it to any certified MMC expert technician and see if he can do something about it.

Using Windows Server 2008 as a workstation OS

Windows Server 2008 is the Fastest OS i have worked on till today..

Below are tips on how you can use your Windows server 2008 as Workstation

1. Enable Hardware Virtualization
Even if your machine's hardware supports virtualization it is most likely not going to be enabled by default. You have to enable it via your BIOS setup.

2. Install the latest Graphics and Audio drivers
Being a server OS Windows 2008 carries with it basic graphics and audio drivers. To utilize the full strength of your hardware ensure you install the latest drivers for both graphics and audio hardware. Only with the proper graphics drivers will you be able to enable the "Aero" experience on Windows 2008.

3. Desktop Experience Feature

The Desktop Experience Feature enables a bunch of stuff that is by default present on a desktop OS. Most importantly it includes Themes, Windows Media player and the Aero related features. You will have to enable it form the Server Manager.
The "Turn Windows features on or off" / "Add remove windows components" has all been rolled into the Server Manager now.

Go to Server Manager > Features > Add Features >Desktop Experience

Installing the Desktop Experience feature does not enable them. You have to manually set them up.

4. Themes
To enable Themes you will basically have to enable the Themes Service. Again being a server OS it is not enabled by default.
type in run menu Services.msc and search for service Themes and enable it
Set the start up type to Automatic
For Enabling the Aero Theme>
For this go to Control Panel > Personalization >Theme and select Windows Aero

5. Search
Search is also disabled by default on Windows 2008. To enable search you will have to add the File Services Role via Server Manager.
Server Manager > Roles > File Services > Windows Search
Outlook relies on this search service.

6. Disable Shutdown Event Tracker
The Shutdown Event Tracker is the pop up that you get asking you for a shutdown reason. To disable it
type gpedit.msc in run menu

Under Computer configuration> Administrative Templates >System
Set Display Shutdown Event Tracer to Disabled

7. Audio
For audio you need to enable the Windows Audio service. You do this by setting the startup type to Automatic.
Services.msc > Windows Audio
Ensure you have proper drivers for your audio hardware...

8. SuperFetch
As a workstation, enabling SupertFetch will give you that additional bit of responsiveness. The SuperFetch services is disabled by default and when you try to enable it you will most likely get an error message "The operating system is not presently configured to run this application"
You will have to make two registry changes to enable this service.

Open up registry editor and go to>

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

Create New DWORD EnablePrefetcher and set its value to 3
Create New DWORD EnableSuperfetch and set its value to 3

9. Get a codec pack.
For media hungry buffs download a codec pack. This will ensure you can play all media files.

10. Enable Hyper-V
With Hyper-V you can run virtual machines on your workstation. This is useful if you want to run your tests on older OS versions. Enabling Hyper-V is easy
Server Manager > Roles > Hyper-V
Remember you need a Hyper-V enabled Windows 2008 licence and also your hardware has to support virtualization.
Also If you are using an existing VHD it may ask you to re-Activate Windows as it detected hardware changes.
One good thing about Windows Server 2008 is that it no longer asks for the i386 folder like Windows 2003 while you enable features.

11.Disable Default Administartor Account
By default Windows 2008 has only Administrator Account and this account has User Account control(UAC) kinda turned off there by allowing any appications to execute directly without any restrictions hence its recommended you create another account with administrative previlages and you can disable default administrator account by running command prompt as administartor or in elevated mode (just type cmd in start search and then press CTRL SHIFT ENTER together)
now type net user administrator /active:no

12.Setting Processor Scheduling
CLick On Start->Control Panel ->System ->Advanced system settings-> Advanced -> Performance -> Settings->Advanced->Adjust best performance->And Tick On Programs

In Windows Xp when you try to open a file that has unknown extensions,it automatically asks you to connect to web and check for the applications that supports that file extension but this is not usefull all the time and sometimes annoying and there is a tweak to disable this..

Well this mainly happens when an application uninstaller crashes during uninstallation process, and thereby the application files gets deleted improperly and its entries remain in the Add/Remove Programs.

To Solve this problem follow Procedure Below

Type regedit in your run menu [Win Key + R] (Win 2000,Xp,2003) or in Start search (Win Vista And 7)

Follow steps below(I have assumed that you have broadband connection and have got a modem or router):

a)After you have downloaded a file from rapidshare, in Mozilla firefox,just click on
tools>clear private data and tick cookies(if possible tick all) and click
clear private data now

For Internet Explorer,click on tools>internet options>delete>delete cookies and click ok(if possible click on delete all).

b)Now open command prompt(click on Run found on start menu and type cmd)
In Windows Vista to open command prompt just click on start button and type cmd and hit enter.

c)now type telenet 192.168.1.1

d)If you are having Airtel connection for login type admin and for password type password
if you are having Bsnl connection for login type admin and for password type admin

e)Now type reboot, this should reboot your router/modem other way to do this is just switch OFF Your router and switch it back ON.

d)Now after the router/modem is back online and Net connection is back ,download the next file from rapidshare without ticket and if you got many file follow same procedure each time before you download .

If you are using Windows Vista, first you have to enable telnet client, so you can follow procedure of turning off and turning on your modem/router instead of telneting to router or to enable telnet on vista in control pannel click on Programs and Features ,now at the left pannel click on turn windows features on and off, now in that new window scroll down and click on telnet client and click on ok and after its completed reboot your pc and telnet is installed, now follow procedure given above.

If you have NTFS partition you might be knowing that you can set permission to files or folders to be accessible Only By you without any 3rd party software, but problem is if you had previously changed permission level & you reinstall your Windows, you might not be having any access over that file or folder, but you can regain access to that file or folder by following steps below

a] click on run in start menu & type CMD
Now in Command prompt type

CD\

b]Now type

CACLS * /E /T /C /P Administrators:F System:F

This Will reset security permission of almost all folders(Except Some Windows Folders) so that it is accessible by all users having administrator rights .

You can even follow same procedure on other drives
To change drive for example to change to D drive type D: in command prompt and then follow steps given above.

1\Use limited account, here is how u do it

a)click on run in start menu and type nusrmgr.cpl
b)Now click on create a new account.
c)type user name you want, and click on next button
d)Now by default computer administrator will be selected, click on Limited and click on create account
e)Now again click on run in start menu and type cmd
f)Now type Net user administrator Type_password_here
in place of Type_password_here type any desired password you want but do remember it as it is very usefull.

2\Make Sure your C drive or drive on which you installed Windows OS is NTFS else follow steps below to convert ur Windows drive to NTFS(Default is C drive)

a)click on run in start menu and type
CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS /V

The above command will convert your C drive to NTFS without any data loss.

Its recommended that you convert all your drives to ntfs for security but if you have older operating system that win 2000(Windows 98 ,Me) you better Not convert other drives to NTFS

3\Now logoff and login to that new account you created which should be available on welcome screen.

4\This is limited account so you wont be having any right access over C drive, good part is even if any virus executes even it wont be having any access to C drive so it cant cause any harm.

5\If you need to install any software, just right click on its setup/installation file and click on run as administrator and in place of password type password you previously set(step 1.d)

Now that that application will run without any problem.

Here's some tips and trick on the net:
*If you dont long-press the menu key - another way to see if you have apps running in the background is to view the menu in icon mode. Usually there's a small "C" on the upper right of each icon, or on the folder where it's located, indicating that an app is currently running there. This is very useful coz it enables you to gain more memory.

* Ever had a time when you forgot to lock your keys after closing the slider? The n95 lets you input a specific time when you want the keys locked. Just to menu/tools/setting/general/security/phone and sim/.... then choose user-defined in the 'phone autolock period', then just put in how many minutes you want.

*Unlike the 6280 and E65, the N95 does not hang up the call when you close the slide. So after the dialing the number you're calling - you can close the slide and have a more compact phone to hold.

*Increase your RAM by deleting the "Welcome" application in your phone. Delete also other apps that you're not using - like the 'Search" app.

*(from hofo) Want to "hide" some pictures so that it doesn't show up in your Gallery? You can move the photos to another folder in your phone. Like the "my videos" folder. These photos can still be seen and viewed by a 3rd party photo viewer or a file manager - but at least, now when you open the gallery - they wont show up.

*If you have a lot of videos (mp4, 3gp, etc) on your phone, it's always better to arrange them in subfolders. Dont keep more than 130 clips in one folder, if over that, just make another subfolder then put another 130 clips there, and so on and on. If having more than 130 clips - it slows down the phone to unbearable speeds when previewing them in the gallery.

*Once every few weeks, especially if you add and delete photos in your gallery, you should delete the "_pAlbtn" subfolder in your "Images" folder. (Use a file xplorer to view and delete this, or use your PC). This would refresh the entire gallery - and would ensure that your thumbnails are updated. If you delete this folder and dont view the images - it will temporarily give you more space in your memory card.

*Set your call LOG to 10 days or less - this will help in speeding up your phone.

*When connected to a TV or Widescreen monitor, and you're viewing smartmovie movies, try this out. Instead of sliding the slider to make it horizontal, a better way is to set smartmovie to 'portrait' mode. It shows up as landscape on the TV - and there's definitely less pixelation on the picture. (than when sliding the slider to horizontal and 'forcing' the phone to compensate.)

*Do you want to have a zoom browser without using the default 95's browser? One of the things that some are complaining about the default browser is that the pages (and the default zoom) show up as very big pages. You have to adjust the zoom levels or go to the page overview to find out where you exactly you are in the page being viewed. Opera Mini 4 Beta solves this in a simple and ingenious way.

* If installing an "unsigned" app, and there's lots of them out there (many are free!)... and the phone refuses to install it. You can turn off the certification check. Just go to 'Tools/App manager/Options/Settings' and set 'Software installation' to "All".... and 'Online certif check' to "Off".

* One handy way to get around the menu icons (in the menu screen) quickly is to quick select them. The N95 displays 12 application icons on a menu screen at any moment, just like other S60 phones. The numeric keypad also has 12 buttons. You can select menu icons by pressing the keypad button that corresponds to the location of the application item on the screen. For example, pressing "1" activates the topmost left application, pressing "2" activates the top center icon, and so on.

* Normally, as in other s60 phones, you can delete an application thru the App Manager menu. But there's a much quicker way of doing this. In the menu screen of whatever app you want to delete... just highlight that icon, then press "C".

* (from webukonline) Don't keep switching back to the Standby screen using the Hangup button. This was OK on old versions of S60, but in almost every instance it closes the current application on the N95 - in other words, it acts as 'Exit'. If you want to keep the current program running in the background, press Menu/Apps instead, twice if you want to get to Standby screen.

* The N95 if you notice... is that not fast when it comes to shot-to-shot speed. This is mainly because the default setting for 'Show captured image' is 'On'. Loading and decoding a megabyte plus of JPG does take a while - do yourself a favour - if you can live without display of what you've just snapped, turn this setting 'Off' and you'll be able to snap photos only three seconds apart, much quicker than the default!

* Never mind the pretty but very slow 'multimedia menu' - you can go straight to music player by pressing and holding the multimedia key.

* In the Calendar menu, '#' moves you immediately to the current day, while '*' toggles between the different views. And if you need to start a new 'meeting' entry at any point, just start entering text.

* Camcorder tips: (from webukonlne) The VGA video capture is one of the unique selling points of the N95, so make sure you make the most of it.
- Make sure you use a top-spec, high performance microSD card. At 28MB/min you're going to need it. A SanDisk Ultra II is ideal. Don't buy a cheap copy off eBay, get one from a genuine vendor.
- Don't use digital zoom - you're simply throwing away quality. If you need to get closer to your subject then get closer!
- Don't try and film too close to the N95, as there's no auto-focus in video mode. Stick to subjects more than a metre away.
- As with still photos, film only in good light; you'll be very disappointed by anything shot in dim conditions.
- Don't pan around a scene too fast. Despite the spec of shooting at 30fps, the N95's video will appear slightly jerky.

* In ver.11 - there's a bug in the N95 firmwares that you need to be aware of. If you change ANY of the scene modes (ie: macro, portrait, etc) the "sharpness" setting gets set to "high". (from the default of "normal"). To use the N95's camera in a scene mode, remember to always go down to the bottom of the camera control icons and reset the 'Sharpness' to normal, otherwise your pictures are going to end up lookin too sharp.

* Dial down the megapixels a little. Ask yourself this, do you really need a 5 megapixel camera every time? Each image will take up well over 1 meg on your memory card. If you need to print on a bond-paper sized paper - 3 megapixels will do just fine. Why waste precious space if you don't have to, right? So just adjust the resolution in the Camera Settings.

* If you're going to use GPS and you're in a car - do yourself a favor, and buy a 12v car charger beforehand. It would certainly be worth the convenience of not worrying all the time if your phone is going to conk out on you... especially if you're lost and is depending on the GPS to navigate yourself out

Speed Up The File System

NTFS is a great file system, but its feature-set comes at a slight cost in performance. You can negate this a little with the following tips:

* By default NTFS will automatically update timestamps whenever a directory is traversed. This isn't a necessary feature, and it slows down large volumes. Disable it by going to Run and type regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem and set 'DisableNTFSLastAccessUpdate' to 1.

* NTFS uses disparate master file control tables to store filesystem information about your drives. Over time these core MFT files grow and become fragmented, slowing down all accesses to the drive. By setting aside a little space, MFT's can grow without becoming fragmented.

In the same key where you disabled the last access feature create a new DWORD value called 'NtfsMftZoneReservation' and set it to 2.

Have you ever been surfing the net and all of the sudden you get a pop-up with a “Messenger Service” listing in the title bar? If so, disable this service.

2. NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing – Home/Pro = Disable

This creates the ability for someone to remotely access your computer through NetMeeting. This is not good! If you don’t use NetMeeting or not that often, disable this service.

3. Protected Storage – Home/Pro = Disable

This service will store your passwords as well as enable the auto-complete function within Internet Explorer (auto-complete is where you type – for e.g. – google and then hit Ctrl + Enter to allow IE to fill in the WWW and .Com for you).

4. Remote Desktop Help Session Manager – Home/Pro = Disable

This service provides support for Remote Assistance sessions. Again, if this service is not something you use or use rarely, disable until required.

5. Remote Registry Service – Pro = Disable

If you don’t require the assistance of someone to remotely have access to editing your registry settings, then disable this service. Your systems registry isn’t something you want to surrender easily to a remote computer.

6. Routing and Remote Access – Home/Pro = Disable

This service enables remote computers dial-in routing to your computer. That surely doesn’t sound like something I would want set to “automatic”.

7. Security Accounts Manager – Home/Pro = Disable

This service works just as Protected Storage collecting secure user information. For XP Pro users, you will not be able to run the Group Policy Editor with this service disabled (the Group Policy Editor is unavailable for XP Home users).

As with anything that may be questionable, create a system restore .As a precautionary measure, you may as well, take note of the default state of the service before you adjust it. It wouldn’t take up too much storage place for a simple Note Pad file holding the defaults for 7 services.

Windows Vista / 2008 Tweaks - tweaking TCP/IP parameters for broadband internet connections

To enter some of the commands below, you will need to run "elevated" command prompt. To do so, click the Start icon and type: cmd , then press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER together. Alternatively, you can navigate to Start > All Programs > Accessories > right-click Command Prompt and choose "Run as Administrator.

Check the TCP/IP state

To check the current status of the Vista TCP/IP tweakable parameters, in elevated command prompt type the following command:

netsh int tcp show global

The settings, as well as their default and recommended state are explained below. The two most important tweakable parameters are "Auto-Tuning Level" and "Congestion Control Provider".
TCP Auto-Tuning
To turn off the default RWIN auto tuning behavior, (in elevated command prompt) type:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

The default auto-tuning level is "normal", and the possible settings for the above command are:

disabled: uses a fixed value for the tcp receive window. Limits it to 64KB (limited at 65535).
higlyrestricted: allows the receive window to grow beyond its default value, very conservatively
restricted: somewhat restricted growth of the tcp receive window beyond its default value
normal: default value, allows the receive window to grow to accommodate most conditions
experimental: allows the receive window to grow to accommodate extreme scenarios (not recommended, it can degrade performance in common scenarios, only intended for research purposes. It enables RWIN values of over 16 MB)

Our recommendation: normal (unless you're experiencing problems).
If you're experiencing problems with your NAT router or SPI firewall, try the "restricted", "highlyrestricted", or even "disabled" state.
Notes:
- Reportedly, many home NAT routers with a SPI firewall may have problems with enabled tcp auto-tuning in it's "normal" state, resulting in slow speeds, packet loss, and general reduced network performance.
- auto-tuning also causes problems with older routers that do not support TCP Windows scaling.
- netsh set commands take effect immediately after executing, there is no need to reboot.

Compound TCP - Improve throughput

The traditional slow-start and congestion avoidance algorithms in TCP help avoid network congestion by gradually increasing the TCP window at the beginning of transfers until the TCP Receive Window boundary is reached, or packet loss occurs. For broadband internet connections that combine high TCP Window with higher latency (high BDP), these algorithms do not increase the TCP windows fast enough to fully utilize the bandwidth of the connection.
Compound TCP (CTCP) is a newer method, available in Vista and Server 2008 (there is also a hotfix available for XP/2003). CTCP increases the TCP send window more aggressively for broadband connections (with large RWIN and BDP). CTCP attempts to maximize Throughput by monitoring delay variations and packet loss. It also ensures that its behavior does not impact other TCP connections negatively.
By default, Vista has ctcp turned off, and Server 2008 turned on. Turning this option on can significantly increase throughput.
To enable CTCP, in elevated command prompt type:

netsh int tcp set global congestionprovider=ctcp

To disable CTCP:

netsh int tcp set global congestionprovider=none

Possible options are: ctcp, none, default (restores the system default value).
Recommended setting: ctcp
It is better to use this newer generation CTCP congestion control algorithm for most broadband connections, we highly recommend it being turned on.

ECN Capability

ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification) is a mechanism that provides routers with an alternate method of communicating network congestion. It is aimed to decrease retransmissions. In essence, ECN assumes that the cause of any packet loss is router congestion. It allows routers experiencing congestion to mark packets and allow clients to automatically lower their transfer rate to prevent further packet loss. ECN is disabled by default in Vista, as it is possible that it may cause problems with some older routers that do not support this feature.
To check whether your router supports ECN, you can use the Microsoft Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool. The results will be displayed under "Traffic Congestion Test".
To enable ECN, in elevated command prompt type:

netsh int tcp set global ecncapability=enabled

Possible settings are: enabled, disabled, default (restores the state to the system default).
The default state is: disabled
Our recommendation: disabled

RSS - Receive-side Scaling

The receive-side scaling setting enables parallelized processing of received packets on multiple processors, while avoiding packet reordering. It avoids packet reordering y separating packets into "flows", and using a single processor for processing all the packets for a given flow. Packets are separated into flows by computing a hash value based on specific fields in each packet, and the resulting hash values are used to select a processor for processing the flow. This approach ensures that all packets belonging to a given TCP connection will be queued to the same processor, in the same order that they were received by the network adapter.
To set RSS:

netsh int tcp set global rss=enabled

Possible rss settings are: disabled, enabled, default (restores rss state to the system default).
Default state is: enabled
Recommended: enabled

TCP Chimney Offload

TCP chimney offload enables Windows to offload all TCP processing for a connection to a network adapter. Offloads are initiated on a per-connection basis. Compared to task offload, TCP chimney offload further reduces networking-related CPU overhead, enabling better overall system performance by freeing up CPU time for other tasks.
To set TCP Chimney Offload:

netsh int tcp set global chimney=enabled

The possible states are: disabled, enabled, default (restores chimney offload state to the system default)
Default state: enabled
Recommended: enabled

Manually tuning Registry Parameters

Many of the registry keys tuning TCP/IP parameters from previous Windows versions no longer work in Vista and Server 2008. Below is a list of the few we've confirmed to still work. Note that for changes to these settings to take effect the computer needs to be rebooted. As always, a registry backup is recommended if making any changes, and some proficiency in using regedit is required.
In regedit (Start icon > Run > type: regedit while logged in as administrator), you can navigate and edit the following keys.
MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) - the maximum packet size.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{...}\
MTU=1500 (DWORD, entry does not exist by default)
The {....} part of the above path is the unique identifier of your network adapter. You can recognize the correct adapter by looking at it's IP address, if obtaining IP automatically labeled by: DhcpIPAddress=192.168.x.x text value, for example.
We recommend leaving this at default, unless you want to lower it. Vista uses the largest possible packet size for the underlying network by default.
Note: In some test environments, the correct MTU entry may be offset by 8. The 8 offset seems to coincide with the size of the PPPoE overhead. Check the result with the TCP Analyzer.

TCP 1323 Options

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\
Tcp1323Opts=1 (DWORD, entry created automatically by Windows when you run the "netsh int tcp set global autotuninglvl=..." command, set to 0 by default).
Setting this seems to have no effect, since auto-tuning uses the TCP 1323 scale factor and changes it on the fly, disregarding this setting. Additional testing may be required to determine it's effect if auto-tuning is turned off. Setting it to 1 is best for broadband connections.

NetDMA

NetDMA enables support for advanced direct memory access. In essence, it provides the ability to more efficiently move network data by minimizing CPU usage. NetDMA frees the CPU from handling memory data transfers between network card data buffers and application buffers by using a DMA engine.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
EnableTCPA=1 (DWORD, 1 to enable, 0 to disable NetDMA. Value not present by default in Vista)
Recommended setting is 1, a new DWORD value may need to be created if not already present in the registry.

Gaming Tweak - Disable Nagle's algorithm

The tweak below allows for tweaking or disabling Nagle's alogrithm. Disabling "nagling" allows for very small packets to be transferred immediately without delay. Note that disabling Nagle's algorithm is only recommended for some games, and it may have negative impact on file transfers/throughput. The dafault state (Nagling enabled) improves performance by allowing several small packets to be combined together into a single, larger packet for more efficient transmission. While this improves overall performance and reduces TCP/IP overhead, it may briefly delay transmission of smaller packets. Keep in mind that disabling Nagle's algorithm may have some negative effect on file transfers, and can only help reduce delay in some games. To implement this tweak, in the registry editor (Start>Run>regedit) find:
This setting configures the maximum number of outstanding ACKs in Windows XP/2003/Vista/2008:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{NIC-id}
There will be multiple NIC interfaces listed there, for example: {1660430C-B14A-4AC2-8F83-B653E83E8297}. Find the correct one with your IP address listed. Under this {NIC-id} key, create a new DWORD value:
TcpAckFrequency=1 (DWORD value, 1=disable, 2=default, 2-n=send ACKs if outstanding ACKs before timed interval. Setting not present by default).
For gaming performance, recommended is 1 (disable). For pure throughput and data streaming, you can experiment with values over 2. If you try larger values, just make sure TcpAckFrequency*MTU is less than RWIN, since the sender may stop sending data if RWIN fills witout acknowledgement.
Also, find the following key (if present):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSMQ\Parameters
Add a new DWORD value:
TCPNoDelay=1 (DWORD value, 0 to enable Nagle's algorithm, 1 to disable, not present by default)
To configure the ACK interval timeout (only has effect if nagling is enabled), find the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{NIC-id}
TcpDelAckTicks=0 (DWORD value, default=2, 0=disable nagling, 1-6=100-600 ms). Note you can also set this to 1 to reduce the nagle effect from the default of 200ms without disabling it.
Notes:
Reportedly, the above gaming tweak (disabling nagle's algorithm) can reduce WoW (World of Warcraft) Latency by almost half!

Reinstall Windows XP without re-activating.

If you were to reinstall Windows XP, you normally must re-activate it as well, even if your hardware is unchanged... luckily, there's a way around this.

First, your hardware between reinstalls must NOT change..

XP keeps the activation information in a file named "wpa.dbl", which can be found in

C:\WINDOWS\System32\

After your activating Windows XP, back this file up to a floppy or some other type of media.

Now, if you ever need (or want) to reinstall Windows XP, go through the whole procedure as you normally would. Once you get into Windows itself, copy the file from your media back into C:\WINDOWS\System32\...

You may need to be in safe mode to do this, however.

To Do so press F5 or F8 Key before Windows Bootup and select safe mode and after you Login copy the file..

MBR Recovery

You installed the Lilo Bootloader too, and now want to get rid of both and get back to WinXp without having to reinstall the whole system or to install a secondary bootloader?

Then this is the right guide for you! It's as simple as 123, believe me.

(Important: To perform this operation it is inalienable that you're still able to start up your Windows XP operating system!
Furthermore this guides assumes that your operating system is on Harddisk 0, drive C:\)

1. Put the WinXP in your cdrom drive (Assumes to be d: if any other type that drive letter instead of d:)

2. Click start -> Run -> and type: d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

This will download and install the "Recovery Console"

3. Right click "My Computer" -> Properties. The System properties pop up.
Click on the "Advanced" tab and then the
"Settings" button"

4. Make sure that "Time to display list of operating systems" is enabled!

5. Restart your PC and start the Recovery Console when the System prompts you.

6. When the Recovery Console prompts you to start a system, just type "1" and push enter.

7. When the Recovery Console has finished loading, type in the following lines:

fixmbr /device/harddisk0

Just ignore all the warning and type "y" for yes.

8. Restart the system

9. Once you've finished this operation you might want to disable the "Time to display..." option in the system panel.

Congrats! You've just successfully restored your Master Boot Record to it's original state!

Alternatively or if you can no longer boot to the harddisk, configure your BIOS to start from cd and boot to the Windows XP cd. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen select R. This will load the recovery console.

Disable "shortcut to" prefix without external programs

Index.dat files are files impossible to delete under windows, and it stores all the information of your surfing history, you can be followed through these dangerous files. and even if you delete your cookies and your history, these index.dat files remain there and become bigger and bigger, their original size is 16kb but they can reach up until 600kb.

to preserve your privacy I found a way to delete them.. it's impossible to do in windows thus you have to reboot your computer then press F8 or F5 for advanced boot options; then choose
"safe mode with command prompt";
log in as administrator and then from there you can delete them freely without windows preventing it.

just go to the root (c:\) by typing CD\

Having trouble watching a movie when you also have a lot of background processes going on?

Here's what to do:

1. Create a new textfile in the root of c:\, but instead of giving it the .txt extension you name it wmp_AboveNormal.bat

2. Right-click this file and choose 'Edit', you'll see it'll open notepad. Put this line in:
start /AboveNormal C:\"Program Files"\"Windows Media Player"\wmplayer.exe %1 %*

3. Save (make sure you save it as .bat, not as .txt) and close.

Now all you have to do is register your mediafiles to this batchfile. Here's how to do that:

4. In Windows Explorer choose Tools>Folder Options >File Types

5. Scroll down(press A) to the AVI filetype

6. Click 'Change' and point to c:\wmp_AboveNormal.bat . Click OK and Close.

Now everytime you dubbleclick an .avi WMP will open with the 'AboveNormal' -priority setting ! (Repeat steps 4-6 to register all mediatypes you want to be opened this way.)

Well windows seem to have a REALLY big problem when it comes to reading AVI files.
It seems that when you click on an AVI file in explorer, it'll try to read the entire AVI file to determine the width,height, etc. of the AVI file (this is displayed in the Properties window).
Now the problem with Windows is that if you have a broken/not fully downloaded AVI file that doesnt contain this info, Windows will scan the entire AVI file trying to figure out all these properties which in the process will probably cause 100% CPU usage and heavy memory usage.

To solve this problem all you have to do is the following:

1. Click On Run in Start Menu and type regedit

2. Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler

3. Delete the "Default" value which should be
"{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"

Please not that this will no longer provide you with the windows properties displaying the AVI file information such as width, height, bitrate etc. But its a small price to pay for saving you resources.

Make sure that you have a Master and a Slave setup on your system. The Slave drive, in this case, is where all the data on the Master is going to go to.

First: Perform a Scandisk your Master drive and follow that with a thorough Defrag. If you have an Antivirus program, do a thorough sweep with the AV first, then do the Scandisk, followed by the Defrag.

Second: Do the same thing to the target drive, as you did the Master: Scandisk then a thorough Defrag.

Third: Right-click on the Target drive and click on Format. When the box comes up, click your mouse onto the "Full" button.

Fourth: After Formatting the Target drive, run a Scandisk again and click on the button that says "Autofix Errors".

Fifth: In this final part, you might want to cut-and-paste to code in, unless you are sure that you can do it without making any mistakes:

Click on the "Start" button, then click on the "Run..." button, then place the following into the Runbox:

"XCOPY C:\*.*D:\ /c/h/e/k/r" (please remove the quotes, of course) then press the "Enter" button.

If you receive an error message, then remove the space from between XCOPY and C:\

1. To install a previous version of Windows onto a computer running Windows Vista (Post-Beta 2)

(Copy bootsect.exe from the boot folder of your Windows Vista DVD and paste it into your Windows XP Windows\system32 folder)

1. Install the previous version of Windows.

Introduction

In Windows Vista, the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store contains boot configuration parameters which control how the operating system is started in the Windows Vista and Windows Server Code Name "Longhorn" operating systems. These were found in the boot.ini file in previous versions of Microsoft Windows. To edit the Windows Vista Boot Menu Options, the Boot Configuration Data Editor - BCDEDIT is used.

The Bcdedit.exe command-line tool can be used to add, delete and edit entries in the BCD store which contains objects. Each object is identified by a GUID (Globally Unique Identifier). Every drive or partition on the system will have its own GUID and could be {legacy} (to describe a drive or partition on which a pre-Windows Vista operating system), {default} (to describe the drive or partition containing the current default operating system), or {current} (to describe the current drive or partition one is booted to), or for example {c34b751a-ff09-11d9-9e6e-0030482375e7} (to describe another drive or partition on which an operating system has been installed).

Bcdedit.exe is located in the \Windows\System32 directory of the Windows Vista partition and can be accessed only from the Command Prompt which is found on the Windows Vista start menu at Start>All Programs>Accessories

Command-line Help

bcdedit /? Shows all commands one is able to use

bcdedit.exe /? CREATESTORE Shows detailed information for the command CREATESTORE or any other command available in bcdedit as shown when running bcdedit /? followed by the particular command more information is required for.

bcdedit or bcdedit /enum all Shows the current structure of your boot configuration data.
The GUID tags {xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx} of all Windows installations present on your computer will be displayed.

Create a Backup

It is strongly recommended that one creates a backup of the BCD store before making any changes to it.

bcdedit /export "D:\BCD Backup\Bcd Backup" Creates a backup to a pre-created folder, in this case "BCD Backup" on drive D:

bcdedit /import "D:\BCD Backup\Bcd Backup" Restores the backup previously created

Making Changes to the Boot Configuration Data

Before making any changes or attempting to use the commands below, run the command bcdedit or bcdedit /enum all to make sure that you use the correct GUID tag. These have been seen to change from build to build and it may be necessary to use {ntldr} instead of {legacy} for example.

bcdedit /set {legacy} Description "Windows XP Professional SP2" Changes the text description of the "Legacy" OS line in the boot menu. The quotation marks must be included in the command

bcdedit /set {current} description "Windows Vista Build 5270 x86" Changes the text of the boot menu line for the Vista or non-Vista installation one is currently booted to, from the default "Microsoft Windows" or other description to that shown in the quotation marks

bcdedit /set {5189b25c-5558-4bf2-bca4-289b11bd29e2} description "Windows Vista Build 5270 x64" Changes the text of the boot menu line for any other Vista installation. One must use the GUID for that particular installation as shown when one runs the bcdedit or bcdedit /enum all command

bcdedit /default {current} Sets the current Windows installation one is booted to as the default Windows boot OS

bcdedit /default {5189b25c-5558-4bf2-bca4-289b11bd29e2} Sets the referenced Windows OS as the {default} Windows boot OS

bcdedit /default {legacy} Sets the legacy (Windows XP) OS as {default} boot item

bcdedit /displayorder Sets the display order of boot menu items for example:

bcdedit.exe /displayorder {legacy} {current}

bcdedit /timeout 15 Changes the default 30 second time-out of the boot menu to 15 seconds or any other value inserted.

Correcting changes to the Partition/Disk structure

Where a partition or a hard drive has been added or removed and has caused the partition/disk structure to change, this can be corrected by running these commands in the order shown:

X:\>X:\boot\fixntfs.exe -lh -all (Where X: is the drive/partition on which the folder "boot" is to be found)

Msconfig - System Configuration Utility

The System Configuration Utility (msconfig) is accessible from the Windows Vista start menu, Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Configuration. It has limited funcionality as regards the BCD store however, with the only relevant functionalities being to change the default boot operating system, to delete a boot menu item and to change the timeout display period of the boot menu.

CAUTION: Making incorrect or invalid changes to one's BCD store can result in the system no longer booting and only those comfortable with using command line entries and who understand the inherent risks of making a mistake should do so.

Speeding Up the Dual-Boot Timeout !

If you dual-boot your computer with Windows XP and another operating system, you see an operating system selection menu on startup. If you typically boot into Windows XP and not the other operating system, you can speed up the dual-boot timeout value so that you do not wait so long for the boot process to select your default operating system and continue with the boot process. The default timeout value is 30 seconds but you can change this setting to 10. This gives you enough time to select the alternate operating system if you want but also speeds up the boot process. You can skip this section if you do not use a dual-boot configuration.
Follow these steps:
1. Locate the boot.ini file on your computer. It is a hidden file by default; mine is located in C:\boot.ini.
2. Open the file with Notepad (which is what opens it by default).
3. Change the Timeout value to 10 (see Figure 4-11).
4. Select File/Save and close Notepad.

Speeding Up Your PPPoE Connection !

If you use a Point-to-Point Protocol connection over Ethernet (PPPoE), you may notice a delay in using the PPPoE connection after startup. By default, there is a 120 second delay but you can stop this behavior by manually configuring an IP address for the network adapter card. One trick that increases your boot time a bit is to lose any fonts in the Fonts folder in Control Panel that you never use. The more fonts you have, the more processing Windows XP has to do to prep all of those fonts for use. You must be a bit careful here to not remove fonts that you might want, but there is a good chance that you can live without many of them. For instance, you may have foreign language fonts and other symbol fonts (such as Wingdings) that you never use.
To delete unneeded fonts, follow these steps:
1. Open the Fonts folder in Control Panel.
2. Select Edit/Select All and then Edit/Copy.
3. Create a new folder on your desktop, open it, and select Edit/Paste.
4. In this new folder, delete any of the fonts you do not want.
5. Return to the Fonts folder in Control Panel. Right-click the selected fonts and click Delete.
6. Go back to your new desktop folder and click Edit/Select All.
7. Return to your Fonts folder and click Edit/Paste. You now have only the desired fonts in the Fonts folder.

Tip:

You can directly delete fonts from the Fonts folder without creating the secondary folder. However, I recommend the preceding steps to help ensure that you do not make a mistake in the deletion process.

Windows XP includes a feature that keeps track of all recent documents you have opened or used. The idea is that you can select Start/Recent Documents History and quickly reopen any document you have recently used. I use many documents each day and never use the feature myself. In my opinion, I can keep up with what I want to use without Windows XP doing it for me.
The bad thing about Recent Documents History is that Windows XP has to calculate what should be put there each time you boot Windows, which can slow things down. So, if you never use the Recent Documents History, it's a good idea to disable it. Here's how:
1. Open the Registry Editor (select Start/Run, type regedit, and click OK).
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mcft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.
3. Create a NoRecentDocsHistory D_WORD key. Double-click the value to open it once it is created.
4. Set the Data Value to 1 to enable the restriction.
5. Click OK and close the Registry Editor. You'll need to restart the computer for the change to take effect.

6.	To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

How to use the Recovery Console command prompt

When you use the Recovery Console, you are working at a special command prompt instead of the ordinary Windows command prompt. The Recovery Console has its own command interpreter. To enter this command interpreter, you are prompted by Recovery Console to type the local Administrator password.

When the Recovery Console starts, you can press F6 to install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver, in case you need such a driver to access the hard disk. This prompt works the same as it does during installation of the operating system.

The Recovery Console takes several seconds to start. When the Recovery Console menu appears, a numbered list of the Windows installations on the computer appears. (Generally, only c:\Windows exists.) Press a number before you press ENTER, even when only one entry appears. If you press ENTER without selecting a number, the computer restarts and begins the process again.

When you see the prompt for %SystemRoot% (generally C:\Windows), you can start using the available commands for the Recovery Console.

Command actions

The following list describes the available commands for the Recovery Console:

•	Attrib changes attributes on one file or subdirectory.
•	Batch executes commands that you specify in the text file, Inputfile. Outputfile holds the output of the commands. If you omit the Outputfile parameter, output appears on the screen.
•	Bootcfg modifies the Boot.ini file for boot configuration and recovery.
•	CD (Chdir) operates only in the system directories of the current Windows installation, removable media, the root directory of any hard disk partition, or the local installation sources.
•	Chkdsk The /p switch runs Chkdsk even if the drive is not flagged as dirty. The /r switch locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. This switch implies /p. Chkdsk requires Autochk. Chkdsk automatically looks for Autochk.exe in the startup folder. If Chkdsk cannot find the file in the startup folder, it looks for the Windows 2000 Setup CD-ROM. If Chkdsk cannot find the installation CD-ROM, Chkdsk prompts the user for the location of Autochk.exe.
•	Cls clears the screen.
•	Copy copies one file to a target location. By default, the target cannot be removable media, and you cannot use wildcard characters. Copying a compressed file from the Windows 2000 Setup CD-ROM automatically decompresses the file.
•	Del (Delete) deletes one file. Operates within the system directories of the current Windows installation, removable media, the root directory of any hard disk partition, or the local installation sources. By default, you cannot use wildcard characters.
•	Dir displays a list of all files, including hidden and system files.
•	Disable disables a Windows system service or driver. The variable `service_or_driver` is the name of the service or driver that you want to disable. When you use this command to disable a service, the command displays the service's original startup type before it changes the type to SERVICE_DISABLED. Note the original startup type so that you can use the enable command to restart the service.
•	Diskpart manages partitions on hard disk volumes. The /add option creates a new partition. The /delete option deletes an existing partition. The variable device is the device name for a new partition (such as \device\harddisk0). The variable drive is the drive letter for a partition that you are deleting (for example, D). Partition is the partition-based name for a partition that you are deleting, (for example: \device\harddisk0\partition1) and can be used instead of the drive variable. The variable size is the size, in megabytes, of a new partition.
•	Enable enables a Windows system service or driver. The variable `service_or_driver` is the name of the service or driver that you want to enable, and `start_type` is the startup type for an enabled service. The startup type uses one of the following formats: SERVICE_BOOT_START SERVICE_SYSTEM_START SERVICE_AUTO_START SERVICE_DEMAND_START
•	Exit quits the Recovery Console, and then restarts the computer.
•	Expand expands a compressed file. The variable source is the file that you want to expand. By default, you cannot use wildcard characters. The variable destination is the directory for the new file. By default, the destination cannot be removable media and cannot be read-only. You can use the attrib command to remove the read-only attribute from the destination directory. The option /f:filespec is required if the source contains more than one file. This option permits wildcard characters. The /y switch disables the overwrite confirmation prompt. The /d switch specifies that the files will not be expanded and displays a directory of the files in the source.
•	Fixboot writes a new startup sector on the system partition.
•	Fixmbr repairs the startup partition's master boot code. The variable device is an optional name that specifies the device that requires a new Master Boot Record. Omit this variable when the target is the startup device.
•	Format formats a disk. The /q switch performs a quick format. The /fs switch specifies the file system.

Recovery Console rules

Several environment rules are in effect while you are working in the Recovery Console. Type set to see the current environment. By default, these are the rules:

•	AllowAllPaths = FALSE prevents access to directories and subdirectories outside the system installation that you selected when you entered the Recovery Console.
•	AllowRemovableMedia = FALSE prevents access to removable media as a target for copied files.
•	AllowWildCards = FALSE prevents wildcard support for commands such as copy and del.
•	NoCopyPrompt = FALSE means that you are prompted by the Recovery Console for confirmation when overwriting an existing file.

How to delete the Recovery Console

To delete the Recovery Console:

1.	Restart your computer, click Start, click My Computer, and then double-click the hard disk where you installed the Recovery Console.
2.	On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
3.	Click Show hidden files and folders, click to clear the Hide protected operating system files check box, and then click OK.
4.	At the root folder, delete the Cmdcons folder and the Cmldr file.
5.	At the root folder, right-click the Boot.ini file, and then click Properties.
6.	Click to clear the Read-only check box, and then click OK. Warning: Modifying the Boot.ini file incorrectly may prevent your computer from restarting. Make sure that you delete only the entry for the Recovery Console. Also, change the attribute for the Boot.ini file back to a read-only state after you finish this procedure. Open the Boot.ini file in Microsoft Windows Notepad, and remove the entry for the Recovery Console. It looks similar to this: C:\cmdcons\bootsect.dat="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
7.	Save the file and close it.

How to install Recovery Console during an unattended installation

To install the Recovery Console during the unattended installation of Windows, you must use the [GuiRunOnce] section of the unattend.txt file.

You may be able to take a shortcut if you’ve previously insalled recovery console. If you can boot to Recovery Console, follow these steps to rebuild a broken boot.ini file:

First things first! Always try to avoid accessing your online accounts from public computers (cyber cafes…etc). With all the keyloggers that may be stuffed in public computers, they pose a serious security risk to users. Keyloggers mean not just trojans, but commercial keyloggers as well.
What are keyloggers ?

Key Loggers are software or hardware tools to that captures the user’s keystrokes from keyboard. It can be useful to determine sources of error in computer systems and is sometimes used to measure employee productivity on certain clerical tasks. However, keyloggers are widely available on the Internet and can be used by private parties to spy on the computer usage of others hence stealing users private data.
Aim of this post on keyloggers

Our aim here is to confuse the keylogger by making it log some gibberish instead of our valid password. Off course, this is not completely foolproof though. Nothing is foolproof on the net. We only have to make it harder for the hacker.(Note: These are tips I personally follow. If you have better ones, let everyone know by commenting here.)
Types of Key Loggers

We’ll be dealing with two types of keyloggers; software and hardware keyloggers.

1. Software keyloggers on the other hand are much more complex and hence difficult to deal with. Most of them record keystrokes, mouse events, clipboard activity..etc. So our best bet is to scramble the keystokes smartly.
2. Hardware keyloggers are much easier to detect. They are mostly attached between the keyboard and the CPU. A manual inspection should be enough in most cases.

How to confuse and avoid the software keyloggers ?

Let’s say we have to enter a password ‘jazz’.

1. Click the password box, type any random key. Select the entered random key with the mouse and type j. So we entered the first letter of the password.
2. Click the password box, type a random key. Again click and type a random key. Select the last two letters with your mouse and type the next valid key of your password.

In this case we managed to enter 2 unwanted characters as against one in the first step.

Continue in a similar way to finish typing the password. You can choose any number of random characters between your password.

So the keylogger will log something like:
[click]b[click]j[click]g[click]m[click]a[click]v[click] z[click]t[click]c[click]z

Note how we used unwanted mouse clicks so that a mouse click is recorded before the random letters also. You can also experiment entering the password in the reverse order, infact any order.

This method can be used for entering the username too, since most banks have account numbers as username. If you are suffering from some keylogger phobia, use this technique while typing the url too.

Another way is utilizing the browser’s search bar or address bar to camouflage the password.
For eg. Click the password box and type a letter of the password. Now click the browser’s address bar or search bar and type some unwanted letters. Alternate between the password box and address/search bar till you finish. The result will be the same as the former method.

Make your Symbian Series 60 phone use your pc's internet connection via bluetooth
With this tutorial, you will learn how to make your Symbian Series 60 (WAP 2.0) phone use your pc's internet connection via bluetooth. The advantages of this are that when your phone is within bluetooth range of your computer, you will have FREE and UNLIMITED mobile internet!!

REQUIREMENTS

1) a Symbian Series 60 phone with WAP 2.0 (Nokia 6600 or 7610 *only* for now) 2) an Internet Router (LAN) 3) Patience! 4) Follow this tutorial in its order GIVEN because some parts can only be done before others and vice versa.

What to do on your phone

1) Download the latest Nokia PC Suite for your phone. For the 6600, it has its own PC Suite which you can find on Nokia.com. For the 7610, download its own PC Suite (whatever it is) from the 7610
2) In your PC Suite, make a new profile/access point/WAP Connection profile (called Access Point in your phone). In the new profile here are the settings that you should change. The rest don't touch.
Set the name to "Bt" (no quotation marks). The capitilization of the B is necessary.
3) The Data Bearer should be GSM Data/HSCSD
4) The Dial-up number must be something, but it can be anything except nothing (make sure you put something in the field)
5) The User name must be a user name on your computer when you log in.
6) The password is the password of your username that you entered for the username. If the username has no password, MAKE AND ACTIVATE ONE (it's mandatory for this) via Control Panel --> User Accounts.
7) Authentication: Normal
8) Use PPP Compression: YES
9) Use Login Script: YES
10) Login Script. This is why you are using PC Suite and not just entering this into your phone directly, the script is complicated. Copy this DIRECTLY and make sure it's IDENTICAL to this script in your profile:

What to do on your PC

1) Make sure you deactivate the Bluetooth COM Port that mRouter is using to connect to your phone. OR, just make sure that you stop Connection Manager from using your phone through bluetooth period- just uncheck bluetooth as a connection option there.
2) Go to Control Panel --> Phone and Modem Options --> Modems --> New. On the first page of the modem installation, CHECK "I will select from a list".
3) Choose "Communications cable between 2 Computers" from the "(Standard Modem Types)" list.
4) Select the COM Port to be the COM Port that your phone connects to via Bluetooth Serial Port.
5) Once you're done and brought back to your modems list, highlight the new modem, click "Properties", and make sure your modem is at the highest speed: 115200 bytes/second.
6) Now, go to Control Panel --> Network Connections. Select "Create a New Connection" from the left margin (it'll start up a wizard).
7) Choose "Set up an Advanced Connection", then "Next".
8) Choose "Accept incoming connections", then "Next".
9) Check the “Communications cable between two computers” modem that you creating, then "Next".
10) Select "Do not allow virtual private connections", then "Next".
11) Check the username that you select in your phone setup step 5, then click "Next".
12) Make sure all options are checked in the list, then highlight "Internet Protocall TCP/IP" and then click "Properties". Click "Specify TCP/IP Addresses" and input this range:
From: 10.0.2.2 To: 10.0.2.254. Now click OK, then Next, and then Finish the wizard. You will return to Network Connections.
13) If you have a connection called "Bluetooth Network" in Network Connections, right-click on it and click "Disable". It should be greyed out now.
14) Run cmd.exe which is found in Start Menu --> Programs/All Programs --> Accessories --> Command Prompt.
15) Enter these commands into cmd.exe after reading 15b.

-Internal should be spelled in the language that your computer uses!!!!
16) Close cmd.exe and YOU ARE DONE CONFIGURING YOUR COMPUTER!!! CONGRATS. hehehe

BACK to your phone settings (you must only do this after configuring steps 1-13 in phone settings and all of the steps in the computer settings!!!)

14) Run gnubox.
15) In gnubox, go to Options --> 2box direct --> Bluetooth. Then, select your computer once Bluetooth searches and finds it.
16) Make sure your computer is on and working, you followed all of the steps shown IN THE ORDER THEY WERE GIVEN IN. Go into Web/Services --> Options --> Settings --> Default Access Point. Select your new access point/profile thingy which is "Bt".
17) FINISH !!! Simply go onto the internet on your phone now, and once you connect, your computer will make a Connection sound (it's kinda mystical-ish). You MAY get an error stating that your script is invalid, but then your phone will continue to try to connect and you will (it happened to me MANY times).
